Thursday July 2, 2009 - 7:30am Update Disclaimer
The big holiday weekend begins for some of you tomorrow. And I wish I could report that the weather was going to be perfect. All things are relative. One person’s bad weather is another person’s good weather. So this forecast should make everyone happy. High pressure has shifted to our east and a trough is working its way across Arizona and into northwest Colorado. This has cleared the way for subtropical moisture to move through Arizona and New Mexico and into southwest Colorado. And it plans on sticking around for a while. We are on our way to a high in the upper 70’s this afternoon with relatively calm winds. We’ll see the sun peak out from time to time but the clouds will increase this afternoon and give us a 30% chance for showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds, heavy downpours, small hail and plenty of lightning. Same story for tomorrow. Friday’s high will be in the upper 70’s with a 40% chance for showers and thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall remains a threat for Friday as well. Your 4th of July will bring a continued 40% chance for showers and t-storms. Since most of these storms need the heat of the day to help get them started we remain hopeful that the big parade will remain dry. Saturday’s high will be in the mid 70’s. Some dryer air will attempt to push in on Sunday but we’ll still have a 30% chance for showers along with a high in the mid 70’s. Monday through Wednesday should offer us temps around 80 and enough moisture to keep the afternoon rain chances with us through the period. So the rain chances continue. Enjoy your Thursday!
Construction on Wolf Creek Pass... The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor SEMA Construction, Inc. will begin a new phase of construction on US 160 Wolf Creek Pass Monday, April 6, 2009. CDOT awarded the contract to SEMA for $4.1 million to widen the roadway to create a rest area and parking facilities within the Rio Grande National Forest.
This construction phase involves a one-half mile stretch of US 160 east of the tunnel/Big Meadows CR 410 (between mile markers 175.1 and 176.8). Crews will be blasting and removing rock on the north side of the highway, constructing rock walls on both sides, installing a precast culvert and a prefabricated composting toilet building on the north side, realigning the roadway with the parking area (which will have seven regular parking spaces and three RV spaces) and upgrading guardrail on both sides to meet current federal safety standards. The parking facility on the south side will have the same number of vehicle and RV spaces.
DAYTIME DELAYS: Starting April 6, motorists can expect intermittent delays of up to 20 minutes (or more, as traffic is cleared in each direction) between the hours of 7:00 AM 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday and from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Fridays. No traffic delays will occur on Saturday or Sunday. The work will continue through November 20 but may be completed sooner, if weather conditions allow. There will be no work over the Memorial Day holiday weekend (Friday, May 22, through Monday, May 25) or the July 4 holiday weekend (Friday, July 3, through Monday, July 6).
For updated project and traffic delay information, or to leave questions or comments, the public may call the construction hotline at (719) 850-0429, or log on to www.dot.state.co.us/wolfcreekpass/.
