I have received reports that Stevens Circle and Martinez Place were actually “worked on” last Tuesday.    Click Here to send me Pothole Updates.

“Just wondering if your infinite wisdom on such matters can help explain the strange anomaly that is occurring around some of the recently filled potholes.  Seems as if some of the “holes” are rebelling by swelling up and creating a new type of obstacle for us to try to dodge.  In sporadic areas on Park Avenue there are strategically placed bumps that we now have to contend with, along with the remaining holes.  Have you witnessed any of these rebellious potholes?  Do you have any explanations? - Yes, I have witnessed some of these.  My best completely uneducated guess would be that as more cracks appear in and around these holes, more moisture is able to saturate what little asphalt there is.  When the temps dip below freezing at night, that allows the moisture to expand and create some of these new bumps. And I would guess the same is true with the holes that have been filled.  The holes are saturated by the melting snow and ice, and the new asphalt really can’t adhere to anything because it’s so wet.  We really need things to dry out so that “real” repairs can be attempted.  When everything is dry, the asphalt will have a better chance of working.  But I don’t care whose ‘phalt’ it is, let’s hope there is a plan in place to repair our roads!

“Just thought it was funny that they tried to fix a pothole on Park Ave. (right by the Rec Center) and instead put a mountain in the middle of the road. You would do more damage to your car hitting it than you would have by dipping into the pothole in the first place!”

“Well I had a front end alignment in the latter part of October, and I just got another one done.  Thank God, I bought the Firestone of free ones for a lifetime.  Check out the pot holes on East and West Golf and Caddy Circle.  No trouble getting the golf ball into the holes these days if you miss the one on the green.  Maybe we should get a few of the good guys out of the jail and put them out repairing these pot holes especially since the county has major money problems.”

“How about the pot hole family outside the Phillip’s Station on N. Pagosa.  There is no way you can enter from N. Pagosa without being swallowed up.”

“We’ve got EVERYONE beat!  Check out Trails Blvd.  We don’t have a road, just holes connected!”

“I forgot to set the emergency break on my 1966 Volkswagen Beetle.  It is tie-dyed in color with a large Peace Sign painted on the hood, and a “Make Love Not War” bumper sticker on the back.  It has an 8 Track tap player in it and an original “Meet The Beatles” 8 Track tape in the glove compartment.  The car was last seen rolling down Stevens Circle and falling into a massive hole on Martinez Place...”

“The pot holes on N. Pagosa! Some are big enough to swallow a small car! The entire street is full of them LOOK OUT!”

“Actually these endless pits called pot holes are the extreme sport for Pagosa drivers.  I make it a contest, since I drive everyday.  Most days I win!  It is to test our driving skills, and if I hit 2 or more per day, I am a big time loser, and my mechanic is the big winner.  Gotta remember from yesterday where they are, and how to skillfully dodge them.  Got my own routine for missing the post office trap...We can do it!  We are the champions! We live in Pagosa!”

“I am thinking the exit at the post office deserves some press as well.  Since these are on “Private Property”, like the hole at the entrance, I am thinking they will need to be fixed by the property owner or lessee or whatever.  Can’t understand why both the County and the State don’t get after and stay on top of these things like the ones on roads in their respective area of responsibility.  They can be very dangerous if not just plain costly.”

“County Road 359 (Coyote Park Road) is horrid!  I think my car may just rattle apart!  There are so many holes, DEEP holes, you cannot dodge them all!  It kinda looks like Swiss cheese...”

“...Guess we’d better get those new higher property taxes paid quickly so they can start paving...?!”

“Check out Cap Avenue...circle Pagosa Lake, particularly the lane going easterly towards Piedra Road.  It has been patched and re- patched for years.  especially where the lake drains over Cloud Cap at the east end of the dam.”

“I would like to change your idea about the list of bad roads to, CAN ANYONE FIND A STREET OR ROAD WITHOUT HOLES?  I think it would be a much shorter list!”
