Sunset

This amazing photo was shot at sunset from the Pagosa Lakes area on 1/21/07. Robert is wanting viewers to let him know if this "flare" is a common phenomena, what causes it, and does it have a name? If you know the answers(s) click on our "Contact Us!" link above and we'll post the answers with this picture. 2/09 UPDATE: Jerrold Granok was kind enough to write in with this explanation: "Robert Green's sunset picture is a "Sun Pillar" caused by the sunlight reflecting off plate-shaped ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Under appropriate conditions you can even see light pillars generated by distant city lights". Thanks for taking the time to send this info Jerrold!
