Greetings From Dr. Lauren

Each of us is born with the ability to live our lives fully and step in to ourDocL 200 fullest potential. But that is only possible if we choose to live in such a way. This does not mean that you simply think positive thoughts, but that you actively engage in a continual learning process. Each event in our lives, may they be joyful or traumatic, gives each of us the opportunity to learn and grow. To some, this may seem like a lot of work. In reality it is quite simple. Simply be willing to observe without judgement, make ammends for mistakes, be responsible for outcomes and circumstances, and make a choice, moment to moment, to live each day better than the last.

Out of Sight, Out Of Mind

Over the years I have worked with many people looking to restore their health. They will often share that they have come to address a specific issue, but other than that they are healthy. As we review their health history, I discover that they are taking medications for various health issues such as blood pressure, acid reflux, thyroid dysfunction, depression, just to name a few. When questioning about these medications they will often respond that the condition is being managed so it isn't a problem. Except, it is.

There is a common understanding in our health care culture that states "If I don't have symptoms, then I am healthy." But nothing could be further from the truth. The use of medications to manage, override or silence a symptom only leads to the potential for greater and greater levels of ill health. Imagine that you are driving down the road and the oil light goes on. Is the oil light your problem or your symptom? Clearly it is your symptom. But where is the problem? It is somewhere else in the car. The oil light is just the way the car is able to communicate to us there is an issue that needs to be addressed. If we apply our current healthcare practice of "out of sight, out of mind" and only deal with our symptom, we would simply take a black marker and color over the oil light. Problem solved! Or is it? If we continue to cover up the oil light and not address the actual underlying issue, what will eventually happen to the engine? If you wouldn't do this with your car, why would you do this with you?

I must be clear. I am NOT saying that medications are bad or that they should not be used. In fact, when used properly, medications can be a powerful tool in the healing process. However, we all know someone who is taking a medication for some health concern. Ask yourself: how many of those people are taking the medication to stave off the impending health crisis, while addressing what got them there, and how many people are just on it?

This "out of sight, out of mind" approach to our health issues is the equivalent of the ostrich sticking its head in the sand. The ostrich believes that since it cannot see the danger, then the danger doesn't exist. So when someone on a medication tells me they are healthy, I ask them "if you were to take the medication away, what would happen?" Inevitably they respond that the issue would come back. Why is that so? Because the use of the medication does not address the how and why the issue is there in the first place. So even though the symptoms are no longer visible, the underlying problem still exists. If you are on a medication to manage a health related problem, how healthy are you really?

The key to true health and healing is not in the management or removal of symptoms. It is in the discovery and correction of the underlying issues. If you would like to learn how you can regain your health, I invite you to attend my free "Foundations of Health and Human Potential" workshop Tuesday, October 27th at 6 PM. Seats are limited. Call today to reserve your seat. (970) 731-9494.

Debunkin The Myth:
Germs DON"T Cause Disease

For as long as I can remember I was told germs cause disease. It is a belief that is seen as "common wisdom" in our culture. And the foundation for much of our health care system is based on this belief. We see this most dramatically at this time of year with the onset of the flu season, especially this year with the concern about the Swine/H1N1 flu virus.

Culturally, we see germs (bacteria, viruses) as enemies that cause illness by simply coming in contact with them. We spend much of our efforts trying to fight to protect ourselves from the ravages of these enemies. Just because specific germs may be present during a specific illness, are they really the cause?

We are surrounded and in contact with germs every moment of our lives. In fact, if all of us were to take a throat culture right now, we would likely find bacteria and viruses for several diseases such as strep, the common cold, and yes, even the flu. If we are constantly exposed to germs, and if germs actually cause disease, why are we not constantly sick?

We have all been in a situation such as a classroom, an office or an airplane where someone was coughing and sneezing, releasing germs in to the closed environment. Some of the people coming in contact with these germs will become sick and some will not. If germs actually cause disease, and all of the people have been equally exposed, why are not all of the people equally sick?

To answer this question we must look at our reasoning. How we came to the belief that germs cause disease is that we reason backwards. Let's look at an example. Whenever there is garbage there are always flies. Since flies are always present at the sight of garbage, then the flies must be the cause of the garbage. Or, each time I see an automobile accident there are police on the scene. Since police are always on the scene of an accident, then the police must be the cause of the accident.

At this point I imagine you are laughing and saying "of course the police didn't cause the accident, the accident drew the police." And therein lies the answer. Germs are opportunistic organisms. On their own, they are unable to cause a disease. They float around waiting for the proper opportunity, much like the flies looking for the garbage. Our bodies can be either a rich, fertile environment for these germs to set up house and grow, or our bodies can be an unwelcoming host. Much like a seed blowing in the wind. If the seed lands in fertile soil, it will sprout roots and grow. But if that same seed lands on a rock there is much less likelihood that the seed will flourish. So in truth, it is not the germ that causes the disease, it is the health of our bodies that will determine whether a disease will manifest or not.

Although it is beneficial to minimize your exposure during this flu season, it is impossible to avoid the flu altogether. So by going on the offensive and developing a healthy body you will build your natural defenses and minimize the "opportunity" for illnesses, such as the flu, to take hold.

Quote of the Month

The only way to improve tomorrow is to know what you did wrong today."

There is something very wrong with making the same mistake over and over again, day in and day out. This shows a lack of self-awareness.

There is nothing wrong with making mistakes. Mistakes are part of life and essential for growth. It's like that saying:

"Happiness comes through good judgment, good judgment comes through experience, and experience comes through bad judgment."

Reflect on your day. Consider all your actions. Were they positive or negative, or, constructive or destructive and in need of repair. By clearly knowing what you are doing wrong you can take immediate steps to improve and advance along your path of self-mastery.

About Dr. Lauren

Dr. Lauren Cohen, DC, brings a progressive model of health care to the Pagosa Springs community that is designed to connect with and increase each person's own healing ability. With more than 15 years of experience specializing in Network Spinal Analysis, Functional Endocrinology and Somato-Respiratory Integration, Dr. Cohen partners with each individual to address his/her specific needs. She incorporates strong educational programs that support her belief that when given the understanding of how the body works and how health is developed, each person can participate more effectively in their care and engage themselves more effectively in their lives.

Description of Services

Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) is an advancement of Chiropractic that moves you from dependence upon the doctor, to an inner awareness and adaptability. As you develop this internal strategy, your body is able to find the area of stress and self correct, releasing the energy stored in the distorted posture back in to your system for more productive use. This life changing work helps you to break free of the old internal patterning that keeps you from advancing in your health and life, and gives you access to aspects of your self that allow you to expand your life experience in ways you did not know were possible.

Somato-Respiratory Integration is a form of somatic (body centered therapy) that enhances your ability to find areas of E-motion (energy in motion) that have become stuck. This work helps you to identify the nature and purpose for the energy and to resolve the issues that formed them. This process expands one's ability to be more present in one's life and to better understand the life experiences that helped to shape each of us.

Functional Endocrinology recognizes that various tissues and organs of the body do not exist in a vacuum but function as an integrated whole. Patterns of dis-ease in the body that are given names in the medical profession are recognized months if not years before they fully manifest in pathological form. This early recognition and understanding of how to restore normal function makes this work the missing link for those that wish to reverse existing health conditions and/or want to ensure the highest level of physiological function available.

I would like to thank everyone for sharing the gift of Network care with those you hold dear, giving then the hope for a healthier and happier life. It is truly an honor to serve you and those you have entrusted to my care.

Thank you for helping to change the world one life at a time.
