December 21, 2010

Pagosa Ranger District is now hiring seasonal employees to work as temporary technicians  in our fire program for the 2011 summer season. Temporary positions are available for both BLM and Forest Service.  Jobs may include fire suppression and mechanical fuels treatment.

Employment will begin in late April and last until mid-October, 2011. Candidates must be citizens of the United States and at least 18 years of age at the time they are available for work.  Salaries range from $11.75 to $13.14 per hour.  Positions require manual labor, and some require camping out in the backcountry. Overtime is possible if you are assigned to a fire.

Forest Service temporary positions will be posted on www.avuedigitalservices.com and all individuals are encouraged to apply. Applicants can apply at any time, but are encouraged to have their applications submitted online by the end of January 2011.

Coyote Hill Ski Trails Closed to Motorized Use

The San Juan Public Lands Pagosa Ranger District has implemented a closure to motorized use, including over-snow machines, in the area adjacent to Coyote Hill and the designated, groomed cross-country ski trails located in the area. The closure area, consisting of approximately 985 acres of National Forest lands, is located to the north and east of Piedra Road where the paved road ends and the graveled section begins. The area of National Forest to the south and west of Piedra Road, including the groomed snowmobile trail and Turkey Springs trailhead, will remain open to over-snow machines. This closure order is necessary to ensure that the integrity of the routes being groomed by the Forest Service for cross-country skiing is maintained throughout the skiing season, to reduce user conflicts, and to improve the overall safety of users in the area.  Violators will face federal citations.

For more information, please contact the Pagosa Ranger District at 970-264-2268.

For additional information, call 264-2268 or visit our office at 180 Pagosa Street. Updates are posted to the left of our front door and under “Road Conditions” at http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/sanjuan.
